WALPOLE, Mass. The vast service garage was like a stage set from a boy’s version of “The Nutcracker.”

Instead of a giant Christmas tree and dancing sugarplums, about six enormous red fire trucks were arrayed in various stages of repair, some with their entire cabs leaning forward, exposing their massive diesel engines.

A water pump lay on the floor beside one truck while toward the rear, two other trucks appeared as though from another toy box — a yellow school bus and a white FedEx truck.

LACONIA — “It’s not ours,” said Firefighter Chris Shipp, pointing to the aerial ladder truck towering above the Harley-Davidson Road Show. Like the motorcycles, the truck arrived from Wisconsin where it was built by Pierce Manufacturing, Inc. of Appleton, which lies 100 miles north of Milwaukee. George Watson, a retired firefighter from Cape Cod, drove the truck, which is a member of the company’s demonstration fleet, from Albany after it was displayed at the New York Fire Chief’s Conference in Utica. “Most of the ladder trucks are custom built to the specifications of the different departments,” he said, “but each year they pick out the most popular ladder truck and add it to the demo fleet.” Watson has been ferrying fire trucks for Pierce, which claims 40-percent of the domestic market for fire and rescue vehicles, for 15 years. The New York Regional Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week Committee recognizes Minuteman Trucks at the New York MED Week Minority Business Networking Awards Celebration

New York, NY, July 31, 2008: Richard Witcher (CEO) and William Witcher (COO) of Minuteman Trucks, Inc. were awarded the 2008 Regional Minority Supplier/Distributor of the Year by the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) and the New York Regional Minority Development Week Committee. The award ceremony was held on Thursday, July 31^st in New York City, comprised of approximately 200 minority entrepreneurs, corporate and government supplier diversity and purchasing representatives, and leaders of local minority business development organizations. The MBDA remains the only federal agency dedicated to the establishment, growth, and competitiveness of minority business enterprise.

Minuteman Trucks was honored for their tremendous growth and supplier quality over the past year. The company has grown progressively since 1991, when Richard and William Witcher made an initial investment with the Ford Motor Company through a program to give under-capitalized minority candidates opportunities to acquire dealerships. As minority candidates of mixed heritage and Filipino descent with extensive experience in the automobile and truck industry, the Witcher brothers’ skills enabled them to gain one of the dealerships through Ford. Due to their successful dealership management, Ford awarded them enough performance bonuses to achieve majority control. From there, Richard and William subsequently financed the remaining Ford stake and established Minuteman Trucks, Inc., a new corporation they owned entirely. Minuteman Trucks continues to be privately held, selling approximately 750 commercial trucks, and $12 million in parts and repairs per year. The Manhattan/Bronx Minority Business Enterprise Center (MBEC) assisted Minuteman Trucks in obtaining Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification with the State of Massachusetts, and the New England Minority Supplier Development Council. Minuteman Trucks has recently been awarded a Multiple Award Schedule Contract through the General Service Administration (GSA). These certifications greatly increased Minuteman’s procurement opportunities, reflecting in their 2007 sales report of over $34 million.

Through Minuteman Trucks’ efforts and the support as a minority business enterprise from the MBDA, they are sure to make an impact on commercial truck sales, parts, and service in the years to come.
